Eight Powerful Website Copywriting Tips And Why 97% of Business Websites Fail To Deliver Return.

Creating a new website and writing website copy can be uncertain experience for many businesses particularly if they are not sure what to write or what the purpose of their website is.

So to eliminate some of the stress and uncertainty whether you are creating a website… thinking of hiring a sales copywriter or writing website copy yourself here's a few tips to help you identify your website visitor and to take into consideration when writing your website copy.

1. Before you write a word ask yourself “What is the purpose of your website?” Do you want your website to create qualified leads, sell a product or service or be more of an educational and informative website where people request more information?

Who? Then ask yourself who is visiting your website and what do they want? Then based on your experiences cut out a photo of your target audience from a magazine, stick it on your computer and write to that person in a conversational tone.

2. Why do you read articles or buy magazines? Something gets your attention right? Forget about Welcome to our website as a headline o your website that’s as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike for too many reason to go into here. Without a strong, powerful or provoking headline you won’t get their attention or keep their attention.

3. Copy style and tone – Make sure you write your content in the style, words and tone your target audience understands so they can understand it and relate to it.

4. Website visitors are time poor and goal orientated. For those of you are 30 years and older did you ever pick up the old hardcopy yellow pages and just flick through it for the sake of it?

No, of course you did not! When you did use the hardcopy yellow pages you were looking for a solution to a problem you had or a product and your website visitors are no different.

Visitors to your website know what they want and are looking for the product or service that is of benefit to them. This means you have to engage them and get their attention within 3 seconds so the second they hit your page, they sat to themselves this business can help me and they stay on your page.

5. Website visitors are scan readers. Reading a computer screen is a lot harder than reading a letter or a print ad. So use benefit driven sub-headers in your website copy to break up the copy and draw the readers eye into specific benefits and format your website copy so it is in small easy to read sections.

6. Contact details every page. Even though I’ve had some heated debates about this with many a website designer or developer, if someone is on my website I like to make it easy for people to contact me there and then whenever they want.

With your contact details on every page it eliminates people having to click here and click there and reduces the chances of the person getting annoyed or giving up altogether. If you make it hard for people to contact you, they’ll forget you and go to your competitors!

7. Failure to capture website visitors details. One of the biggest mistakes most businesses website make is not having a name capture feature.

Remember these people have to come to you and your website by whatever means. Maybe they did a search and you came up in the search engine results? Maybe you met them at a networking event and they are checking you out online or maybe someone they know has sent them to your website.

The best way to capture their details and build your list with qualified leads so you can put them into your marketing funnel is to have a free offer, free report or something that is of use to your website visitor. It has to be something of use to them and you need to give them a reason to leave their details as well.

An example could be

If you’d like to save $12,000 on your Mortgage in the next 12 months download a FREE copy of our “Save $12,000 On Your Mortgage” report right now while you’re here. It’s FREE and our gift to you.

This encourages them to take action and leave their details so you can start building a relationship with them. It also positions you as the go to experts in your field and helps build trust and relationships with new prospects.

8. Call to action. Always direct the prospect on what you would like them to do to take the next step. You may know what you want them to do but they don’t.
